Roy Patteson began painting in 1991 after a career in higher education and the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, USA. He gained a foundation in art through early studies in architecture at the University of Virginia. He holds degrees from the University of Richmond (B.A.); Union Theological Seminary (B.D.); and, Duke University (Th.M. and Ph.D.).

Patteson’s art has received numerous awards and has been included in many juried exhibits, including the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, the Millwood Exhibition in northern Virginia, the Beverley Street Studio School exhibitions in Staunton, the Capella Sant’ Anna, Perugia,Italy, and Nelson Fine Arts, Lexington, VA. He and his wife, Pauline, have had numerous two-person exhibits, most recently at the Shenadoah Valley Arts Center, Waynesboro, VA and at Studio Eleven, Lexington, VA. In 1998 and 1999 Oil Painters of America selected his work for its national exhibits in Washington, D.C. and Scottsdale, AZ, respectively.
His work is represented by The Berkley Gallery, Warrenton, VA and by The Mustoe House, Hot Springs, VA . He holds membership in the Rockbridge Arts Guild, the Shenandoah Valley Art Center, Central Shenandoah Arts, and Oil Painters of America.
