| Hans' professional
career was as a scientist. He was educated at Oberlin (BA), then Harvard
(PhD). While a graduate student, he fell in love with single lens reflex
cameras and macro lenses for close up work.
He joined the Faculty of
the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Utah in 1960 and retired
33 years later as Professor. His research specialty was lipid metabolism.
Not much time for photography.
He retired to Southern Oregon
where he was active in conservation work. He took on the river monitoring
program of the Applegate River Watershed Council and greatly expanded the
program. He acquired a digital camera and started to fool with the computer
as a desktop darkroom.
Three years ago he moved
to the Northern Neck of Virginia. In an effort to expand his sporadic interest
in photography, he joined the Rappahannock Art League. The photographers
there helped him sharpen his skills with camera and computer and he became
a regular displaying artist in their Studio Gallery.
He enjoys digital photography
because of the control the cameras give over image capture, and the computer
provides an interesting tool for image manipulation.
