Medium - Oils, Pastels, Watercolors
Dorothy Coker, a local artist from Rockbridge Baths, Virginia relocated to Virginia with her husband, Tom, in 1994 where she rekindled her love of drawing and painting when she enrolled in oil painting classes with Eleanore Fauber at Chapel Hill Artists. Dorothy decided to use the childhood nickname, “Whoozie”, as her signature in memory of an artistic mother who filled their home with hand painted treasures. She has studied oil and watercolor painting with Barbara Crawford and Marcus Vincent at Southern Virginia University, Chinese Painting with Virginia Lloyd-Davies and attended workshops in New York, Virginia and West Virginia to hone her skills and develop new techniques.
Dorothy's art includes landscapes, seascapes, floral arrangements, portraits, and still life paintings in oil, pastel, and watercolor. Inspiration comes from photographs taken over the years of family or friends and on vacations, from the wonderful landscapes and views seen in Rockbridge County and from the many art books and magazines she avidly reads. Each painting and technique presents a new challenge that is relished and enjoyed. The more she paints, the more she loves to paint.
Her work was exhibited with other Chapel artists in addition to solo exhibitions and is currently represented at the Alleghany Arts and Crafts Center in Clifton Forge. She has exhibited with the Rockbridge Art Guild at Hopkins Green, the Chapel on the Hill Gallery, the Bath County Art Show, the Rockbridge County Fair, Bridgewater Village Community Center, The Bistro on Main Street, An Artist’s View, the Staunton Public Library, the Rockbridge Regional Library, the Shenandoah Valley Art Center, and various other art galleries. Her work is included in many private collections.
